WAYNESBORO - Charlie Samuel Brooks of 1069 Albemarle Ave. died in University of Virginia Hospital Wednesday morning (Dec. 11, 1974), following an illness of four days. He entered Waynesboro Community Hospital on Sunday and was transferred to the university on Monday.
He was born in Charlottesville July 22, 1956, son of Charlie S. and Bettie (Brooks) Diggs of Waynesboro and spent his life here. He was a senior at Waynesboro High School and played on the basketball team. He was a member of St. James Baptist Church and its youth club; also he participated in the Upward Bound Program at University of Virginia.
Surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charlie S. Diggs Jr. of Waynesboro; a sister, Miss Leslie Brooks, and two brothers, Theotis and Jeffrey Brooks, all of Waynesboro; maternal grandmother, Mrs. Katherine T. Brooks of Freeport, N.Y.; paternal grandmother, Mrs. Mealie Diggs of Waynesboro, and a number of other relatives.
A service will be conducted in St. James Baptist Church 2 p.m. Saturday by the Rev. Samuel E. Cubbage, assisted by the ministerial alliance. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery.
The body is at the Jones Funeral Home in Staunton and will be placed in the church at noon Saturday.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the WHS basketball team and the Upward Bound Program.
Pallbearers will be Anthony Awkard, Dwight Casey, Frank Fuller Jr., Bradford Gray, Ernest Howard, Keith and Marvin Jones, Jimmie Miller and Carl and Earl Woods.
